ACADEMICS
College Guidance
The four advisers in the Academy’s college guidance office help students and their families identify suitable higher-education options, manage the application process, and apply for financial assistance or merit aid. The process begins with a college guidance seminar for parents when their student is in eighth grade. Starting in 10th grade, students are assigned to a college adviser and attend regular College Knowledge learning seminars to help them learn about and stay on track with the college application process. This prepares students to undertake the main work of researching, choosing, and applying to their top-choice colleges.

College Knowledge
The college process asks students to use many of the skills that they have been honing during their Academy careers – self-reflection, critical thinking, analysis, discussion, and persuasive writing. These skills are directed toward a new set of knowledge: college types, personal essays, interviews, majors, careers, applications, deadlines, and college costs.
All students in the 10-12 division at Albuquerque Academy are required to enroll in a College Knowledge seminar each year. College Knowledge is an exploration of the college search and application process taught by the Academy’s college advisers. Students will be introduced to concepts and tools critical to the college application process.
Sophomores: College Explorations
This seminar is designed to dispel some common myths about colleges and college admissions, to introduce some basic vocabulary and different types of colleges, and to explore the different parts of a college application. It includes a basic overview of standardized testing and test prep strategies and presents a basic interest inventory to introduce different career paths. College Explorations helps students get to know the College Guidance staff and their particular areas of expertise.
Juniors: College Planning
The second year of College Knowledge places more emphasis on the tools that students use for their college searches and, eventually, their applications. The primary tool that students use is the online search and processing platform, Scoir. There is also more in-depth discussion of testing and test prep, financing college, and the college essay and other requirements of college applications.
Seniors: College Transitions
The final year of the College Knowledge program focuses on application work time. At the beginning of the year, all seniors apply to the University of New Mexico. Class time is devoted to completing the Common Application, the Coalition Application, and applications to other state systems. The college advisers help seniors revise their college essays and finalize their college application lists. College Transitions also covers financial aid applications and scholarship searches.
